12 gauge shotgun. you don't need to be a sharpshooter and it doesn't take long to learn how to use one.

Pepper spray sucks balls to be hit with but I still recommend a shotgun.

missoakley,

Please DO NOT WASTE MONEY ON A TASER. I have been a TASER instructor for nearly a decade and it is by far the least reliable item for your money.

Get quality pepper spray.

Get a good bright flashlight that will last you decades. I have used Surefire flashlights for decades and they are rugged and reliable. There probably are as good and less expensive lights out there but I can recommend this brand without any hesitation.

Get a big enough size that you have enough for the bad GUYS. Because they like to hang out together. I recommend going to Special Ops police supply in OKC (It's moved after their fire to NW 10th street, north and just east of the Fair Grounds. Call them I think they are only open M-F (405) 946-3504. I have used the First Defense STREAM .02% on approximatly 15 people in the last 18 years and it has worked every time. You have to get in in their face (eyes are the target) and even if they are drunk and combative, after a few seconds they are burning down. AVOID the small key chain gas station "pepper sprays" as they don't have enough in them an dmay be of questionable quality.

I recommed the MK 4 version because its big enough for 10-12 one second "bursts", but in reality when you use it start spraying and hose their face for a few seconds and they will be in hot pepper heaven wanting it to stop burning. It is like having a hot boiling pot of water on your face.

There are three kinds of pepper spray 1) Fogger type - avoid it it gets everywhere including on you, 2) Stream, this is the best option because you can see the stream even in low light to aim in on the bad guys face and it extends the range over any fogger to about 15 feet. 3) Foam, this is used generally inside jails or where you want to limit the exposure of the spray as much as possible as no to get it on non combatants and to not allow it into the ventalation system of buildings. The bad about foam is they can wipe it off and try to rub in or throw it on you...

Lock your house up. Might also consider an alarm. I hear GREAT things about this system that you can chose to have monitored for $15.- a month plus you can take it with you should you move, no contracts...

Simpli Safe.

Wasp spray is a bad idea, it won't work, plenty of stories online about intruders going right through it.

If your going to get pepper spray, get the gel. In confined quarters of a home its best not to have the mist floating I'm the air incase you have to escape that direction.

I suggest a a taser that fires probes, it allows you to keep distance and keep shocking even after the initial hit. Turn it ALL the way up.

If you have others in the house(daughter) I don't suggest a gun if you don't have training. If you miss and your daughter is in the next room over penetration is a serious concern.

Get a monitored alarm system, so the police show up. Have panic buttons installed at all outside doors along with a portable one for your purse.

Fire extinguishers.... sprayed in the face. Large blast so accuracy is not as hard, holds a lot, can be used as a bat to hit them with, won't affect you if you run through it, dual purpose for fire control....

Keep your car keys next to the bed...hear a strange noise, set off the panic alarm on your car in the garage. If you live in a neighborhood, it will be heard to concern a prowler.....

My daughter is my concern, I wouldn't want to shoot a gun without a bit of practice. Spraying pepper spray is ideal, just have to set up a safety plan with her so that she would never be in harms way if someone did intrude. I have a list going and I definitely plan on getting a very bright flashlight to start, then some spray. I just moved my large can of hairspray to my bedside until I go shopping for the real stuff this weekend!
