I'm a fan of the high ground idea. You can check the 100 and 100 yr flood predictions to verify in your specific case, but even in cases of dams breaking, flood waters rarely rise over 30' (case dependent) so as long as you have a swail around both sides of you house that will accommodate a 100, 500 or 1000 yr flood you should be good, and in case of flood have a mote to prevent looters from accessing your stuff.

Better yet, live on high ground and not near a creek or river.

Grew up in west Texas high desert. In 1968 had a rain from remnants of a hurricane dropped huge amounts of rain in short period. Streets in our neighborhood looked just like what's happening in Colo. News had a man standing knee deep water that was standing on the chimney of his 2 story house. Nearest creek is over 100 miles away.

We survived the flood in Alvin, Tx in 1978 (see Guinness Book: record rainfall).

Las Vegas has had several floods. ANYPLACE can flood. How do you prepare? Same way you prepare for a tornado. Do what you can, pay attention to the weather, expect to NOT be prepared for what happens.
