Any place that has .270 and .30-06 is most likely going to have .300 Winchester. Especially if you're somewhere that you need a big magnum, the local stores probably stock ammo for it.

Anything in North America? Either a .300 or .338 Winchester mag.

Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding! Ding!

Fries are done.... :preocc:

.300WM.

(not have problems finding ammo)

I've seen 300WM ammo at stores that I would've never thought carrying it. When I have been on a mission to find it, I've found it fairly fast. Even out in BFE.

For anything in north America my vote is for the 338 win mag. If you need something bigger than a 270 then you need a bigger hole not just more speed.

If you were happy with the 30-06, and would be again, you might want to consider 7.62x54. There's no serious difference between the two and x54 is much cheaper to shoot.

I'm not saying I would relish serious Brown Bear hunting with x54, but it could certainly be done. Doesn't really sound like you plan to do any of that, either.

I have to go 30-06. It's not sexy, but it's been around for 100+ years for a reason. It works. There's not anything easier to find ammo for other than maybe a 22LR. Ammo selection is bigger than any other caliber 55gr to 220gr. One gun for anything in NA right? I'm down to only one 06 right now but I'm putting another one together soon. I have had up to four 06's in the safe at one time. I've got stuff from 222 to 416rem in the case, 300wby, 300saum, 308, 30-06, and I pick up the 06 a lot of the time when going hunting.

Realistically what do you think you "might" be hunting with it?
That really needs to be answered first.
No need to buy a cannon if you won't use it.

Anything walking on two or four legs in North America can be taken cleanly with the 30-06. You can go light 100 to 110gr all the way to 220gr in factory loadings. Reloading you can push both ends. Unless you just feel you need a cannon, stick with the 30-06.

Exactly. You wouldnt hunt deer with the same rifle you hunt brown bear hunt. At least i wouldnt. A 7mm is a good inbetween round for elk 175grn and deer 150grn ammo. Its all about ammo selection

to have one gun for all game on n. America is almost impossible, just tailor it to what you will be hunting the most. Then later if you go up to alaska or somewhere else pick up a 338 or 375. By then you should have the itch to buy a new gun
