Really, come on people. The only reason they scan the ID is that the point of sale system takes the clerks guess work out of reading the ID and to insure that Target is following the law of who can purchase alcohol. When they scan the alcohol the POS system requires ID proof od age, before the clerk had to input the go/no go response. Then if the sale was not legal the manager had to suffer the wrath of a ticket. This way the clerk scans the alcohol, then scans the backside of the DL for a positive confirmation of a legal purchase.

I see no problems with this, most bars in the surrounding states have been doing this for years.

This. And really folks, there is no secret "algorithm". It is quite well known and widely used.

I got a Sam's Club membership a few months back and they asked for my DL. I asked why? They said that they had to verify my ID before they would give me a membership. I gave the lady my DL and the next thing I know, she's typing in my license number. I asked her why? She said "I don't know, thats just what they tell us to do."

Hmmm at the Sam's Club thing. They've not done that with us.

I buy my beer at Buy4Less ... they just ask me when my birthdate is ... I'm kinda old fashioned that way I guess ... same thing with the little package store up the street.

I've never seen this done. With the amount of identity theft out there, you'd be foolish to not be concerned when someone is scanning your info into a system that you have no control over and they haven't explained what safeguards are in place. Hell, the federal government has allowed my Personally Identifiable Information (PII) to be compromised, twice! :(

Like I need another reason to not shop at target, tarjay has been on my out list since they decided to not donate coffee to the troops going and comming between the sandbox because they didn't agree with the war back in the 43rd admin.

I didn't know that. If it's true, and not an urban myth like the Starbucks/Iraq war thing, I've definitely made my last purchase at Target. Not that they'll miss me as a customer. But I'll feel better about where my ten or fifteen dollars for tooth paste, laundry detergent and Cheetos goes.
