My ATX friend took us to Violet Crown Social Club last time. It's on E. 6th a few blocks east of 35. Cool place with a pizza truck out front always and other food trucks sometimes. Probably the coolest bar I've been to there. I'll go back for sure. Nice patio, nice inside too.

I wanna go to the mezcal bar above Whisler's on E 6th next time I'm down there.

I'd grab some Mexican food from any of the many roach coaches around town, and it is well worth the drive to Driftwood for the Salt Lick barbecue. Awesome indoor open pits, and it's BYOB, so bring your cooler!!! Real cool atmosphere, and of course the barbecue is fantastic.

Just grabbing some food and hanging out in Zilker park and people watching is good enough for me, its what I did the summers I lived there. I get enough of 6th St and all the clubs during SXSW.

Beers on 6th street. Side trip to Gurene. Plenty of good eats.

It's Gruene, pronounced "Green": http://www.gruenetexas.com/. Great little town with terrific shopping and lots of history (check out Gruene Hall: http://gruenehall.com/). Eat at the Gristmill restaurant right behind the dance hall: http://www.gristmillrestaurant.com/.

As for Austin barbeque, skip the hours-long wait at Franklin and the overpriced tourist trap that is Salt Lick and instead go to Terry Black's on Barton Springs Road just south across the river from downtown, or better yet take the short drive to Lockhart and eat at Kreuz Market; Smitty's Market; or Black's Barbeque - each of them just as good as Franklin and likely won't have to wait at all at any of them to eat.

I second the recommendations to stay away from Sixth Street - too many drunks and panhandlers. Although the 1886 Café and Bakery in The Driskell hotel on 6th is extremely good and worth fighting through them to get to it.
