I'd like to get a nice 1911 Colt-type pistol, but I'm not exactly sure I want to pay for a top of the line model. Can anyone recommend a good, basic 1911 that won't cost me 5 arms and 3 legs (considering the marked decrease in pay thanks to Obama)? Thanks.

I just bought a Rock Island made by Armscorp, they are made in the Phillipines. I will tell you they are no $1000 pistol in fit and finish but they shoot well, have a lifetime and pretty good reviews online. I can really only complain about 2 things on mine, the finish is not the greatest but I bought it as a carry gun so I was not worried about it and the trigger is not the greatest but can be corrected for a little money.

I agree that you just can't go wrong with an RIA, but don't think of it as a starter 1911. They are good guns.Period. I would also recommend Smith and Wesson 1911's. I have two and I love them.
