I agree that it's impossible to work your way through college today unless you already have a very lucrative job, which few young people do. I put that on the shoulders of the greedy colleges, fueled by the Federal Govt. All this discussion of loan forgiveness just throws gasoline on that fire. If the government is going to eventually forgive my debt, why not run it on up?
Personally, I think the government should limit the loan amounts to reign in tuition. They could also direct student loans and grants toward skills that we need - engineers for example. But that ain't gonna happen, because our government is heavy in ivy league alumni. Those ivy league schools produce thousands of Liz Warrens every year.
If you are suggesting we trade wasteful spending for student loan forgiveness, it's not an either/or. The Govt wants to keep wasting (our/your) money PLUS forgive student loans, again with our bottomless pit of money.
My personal solution for my family was to set up a scholarship fund. My parents gave me some property years ago, I sold that property and set aside the funds - invested - to start a family scholarship program in my parents' name. It won't pay the full toll yet, but it reduces the total to a manageable amount. I do specify that it only supports a degree in STEM, Business or Law. No arts and social programs. If they want to do Good for their fellow man, they can establish a productive career and use their earned income for that.
Right now there are two family members in college - my great Niece and nephew. One is almost through an ME degree, the other is in Nursing school. Both are being conservative with how their education is paid for.
