This may have been discussed before sorry if it has. I want to know the advantages to the 22mag over the 22lr. I don't hunt much, just plink ,target shoot. I've never owned a mag but I've been considering a rifle and pistol in that caliber. I would like opinions if they are worth the extra expense in ammo. Thanks in advance.

hands down .22 LR over .22 mag
being able to shoot much as you can stand cannot be overstated.

.22 LR has plenty of power for most any small critter.

.17hmr would make a decent rifle and pistol caliber. Still not terribly cheap, but I think it is a much better choice than .22mag.

.22lr still takes the cake for good fun on a budget.

A pistol with interchangeable cylinders is fun too. Like one of the Heritage single actions that come with 22LR and 22Mag cylinders. Shoot cheap 22LR most of the time but still have the option of 22Mag if you want.
