I think you are both right. It all depends on how the competitor wishes to attempt the course. Since it is an "open" type of event each competitor is able to make the experience as easy or difficult as they desire by how they attack the course and with what equipment. At the end of the day; for me, it is a competition with myself and a way to test my gear.
