I went with the Ruger 10/22 because of price, history, and add on options.
My brother in law has the M&P 15-22 which is fun to shoot just the same, but is a bit more than I wanted to spend on a .22.

If you get a 10/22, buy it used you can usually get one for around $200. That will allow you to do a custom build, Midway has a heavy barrel right now for $99 and you can get a Boyd's laminate stock for another $100. Watch out though upgrading is addictive! Tech Sight and Williams both have nice looking peep or scope base integrated peeps you can add as well.

I bought a stainless Rem 597 in high school it came with a Boyd stock and I love it, add a Volquartsen Extractor and she will run like a top.

I really would like to get my hands on one of those M&P 15/22's though.

Remember, if you buy a 10/22 and start customizing it... you will eventually put more $ into it than you would have if you had just gone with a good S&W M&P 15-22 in the first place.
