Every year I get the males fighting each other over ownership of the feeder.

The females slide right in and feed, no problem, whilst the males are dive bombing each other.

When we had our feeder at the patio door, there was a steel T-post at the far patio corner that I put in to mount a rain gauge on.

We had cats, and I had made a cat-toy out of a wire coat-hanger wrapped around the T-post that stuck out 16-18 inches, with a loop in the end. Tied a string to the loop that hung down with a ping-pong ball on the end. The cats loved it.

Turned out the humming birds did too. They would take turns guarding the feeder while they perched on that coat-hanger in between. I guess it was about the right size for their tiny feetsies...

We only have a few this year. Since we spend summers elsewhere now, the big crowds have not came back. Wife was feeding almost a gallon of sugar water daily through 6 feeders.
I'm betting the checkout people at the grocery store thought I was a moon shiner when bringing 20 lbs or so of sugar through the checkout.

It's a good idea to make some kind of perch for them nearby.. I use small (1/8" or 3/16") dowels glued between bricks on the porch pillars. Gives them a place to rest, especially the alpha male.
