You must have been the first one told that because I'm a developer and have yet to see any info about this. If it is true please provide a link as it will rock the android world hard. Please notify everyone over at http://source.android.com/ there have been rumors for the last year that android was going closed source which never happened. Honeycomb android 3.0 source was not released like 1.5-2.3 and now 4.0 have been promptly released as SDK sources for developers. If they close source android they will have signed their own death certificate.

I'm not trying to call anyone a liar or say BS on anyone just that there have been rumors for a long time about this and have all turned out false. If you can give me a link then I'll be very upset with google.

Claims like that usually don't have any proof. My M-17 is better then your M-16. :D

I know this is a bit old but most of the main points are still valid. And you still think Android is "open"???

You just told a person that they are not keeping up with Android news and you posted a link from 9 months ago, that's rich. :)

Read my post. I indicated that it was old. The issues the guy raises are still valid though or maybe even gotten worse since that article was written. That's the point. People still act like Android is this wonderful utopia of open programming when it hasn't been for a long time. At this point it being "open" is more of a marketing gimmick than anything.

Oh I read it alright...

Those points are valid for Honeycomb, which just a handful of devices run. Everyone knows Google messed up by rushing it to the market. Google kept it locked down because they knew it was a hack job.

So now that we are all keeping up with the news from the last 6 months. 4.0 source was released, and everyone had forgotten about 3.0+ because it was a bad dream. 3 out of the 4 versions were released.

Do you still think "Google is about to pull the plug on open source"?

So it's open, but not as open as some other things. So there for it's not open?
Anyone who is not intentionally being obtuse can easily see that "openness" is a continuum and not an either/or proposition. And clearly Android is becoming less and less open all the time.

I'll go with the "it's open" argument but as with any open source product it takes a considerable amount of time tinkering to get it just right. After 15 years in IT I got tired of fixing problems and just want something that just works.

The iPhone is that something...
