Large caliber handgun rounds as well as buckshot easily penetrate drywall, so be sure you consider what's behind your target before you unload on 'em.

Of course FMJ rifle rounds (e.g. .308) will penetrate drywall, and probably continue right on through the exterior brick.

I've read that 55 grn. 5.56 rounds have such high velocity that they fragment and don't penetrate drywall, and thus are less likely to go where you don't want them to go.

However, this claim seems contradicted by this test done by "Box of Truth"

As far as terminal ballistics, there's really no comparison between 12 ga. 00 buck and a handgun round, not even the venerable .45 ACP.

Use the handgun to get the kiddos to your safe room, then grab the shotgun until the police arrive.

What do you do on a dark night?

For all the shotgunners - you'd better have a light mounted on it with a pressure switch.

A small flashlight with an endcap switch works very well with a handgun. There a couple of different ways to hold it together with the handgun.

Can't really vote. The answer is both.

Shotgun is best when staying put / calling 911 / setting up a defensive position.

Handgun is better if for some reason you need to venture out and through the home, going around corners and such (to check on loved ones, etc.)

I guess if I had to say, then shotgun, just because it's *more likely* that you'd do the stay put / call 911 / wait for the cavalry thing, just since most people keep a phone in the bedroom.

I think they are both nearly-equally-important tools in the home defense toolbox.

Just For Quriositys Sake I Have A Question. If I Was Out Head Hunting Some High Base Brass 00 Would Be Great For Combat Or What Not. We Are Assuming That We Have An Intruder In The House And Dont Want Unnessisary Structural Damage Or Over Penitration Right? We Dont Realy Care About The Intruder Fealings So Why Wouldnt Low Base Bird Shot Like 7 1/2 Or 8 In Close Quartes Be A Good Option? It Would Still Make A Mess Out Of Him And Less Worry About Were The Shot Is Going.
