Some newer houses have crazy pitched roofs that are not fun to walk on. Older houses had more gradual pitch roofs that any DIYer could go up and walk on without worrying about sliding off.
Houses built in the 20's and 30's have some crazy pitched roofs. Ours is a 10:12 and I won't get on it. Some of those in the 1920's have some pitches steeper than 12:12

This is what I use to do. The "tree" is made from EMT, bailing wire and LED lights. Looks great in person. This year will be replaced with a inflatable since I am not allowed on a ladder. Anyone wants it I will trade for a box of 223 / 5.56. :P
