How so? Ever checked your pattern at 3 yards? It's what, 3 inches?

I wouldn't say easier to get a hit, but I would say a helluva more effective it. It's like being hit with 9 .32 bullets at once. That's why I'd go with a shotgun if we had one.

I wasn't referring to the spread of the shot.

If I fire my 9mm from 3 meters...and just miss you, or hit you in a non-critical area, you'll have a better chance of fighting back than if I fired my 870. The concussion from a shotgun and impact of the round is far greater.

A 12 gauge at 3 meters anywhere on your body will put you out of action.

I think we've established that it doesn't matter what you use, AS LONG AS YOU HIT THEM, and keep hitting them.

"by any measure" ? Most people use bird shot and at 30 feet with bird shot to the body versus a .45 to the head, the handgun "measures" more lethal.

I disagree with your assertion that "most" people use bird shot as a defensive round. I started from the assumption of using the right tool for the job....

But I'll clarify my previous comment:

Since we are talking about home defense: When using loads suitable for defense, a shotgun is far more lethal than a handgun at ranges one would encounter within the home.
