If your mask is not filtering particles to dimensions smaller than this it will not stop the pathogen from entering your respiratory system. The reason that those infected need to wear masks is to prevent droplets, the pathogens mode of dissemination from the host, from getting into the respiratory systems of people around them.

If someone is coughing and sneezing in proximity to you, it is all over your hair, face, skin, clothes, neck, etc. A mask isn't going to help a lot. If you are the one coughing and sneezing, wearing a mask can reduce the spread of YOUR droplets massively reducing the risk to others around you.
It's not that a mask CANNOT help if you are preventing your OWN exposure, but it is pretty minimal. Think about how much wearing a mask would help you if you walked out into a rainstorm. Sure, your mouth and nose might be dry. The rest of you, not so much.
All those parts are washable. Yer lungs, not so much.
Better throw some goggles or an eye shield in there, too, then, eh?

Healthcare workers are using them because they are in high risk, high exposure situations.
People shopping at WalMart... not so much. But hey, do your thing, man.
One of the reasons this virus spreads so easily is from asymptomatic carriers conducting themselves like any other day. Wearing a mask protects you and others the same as covering your mouth when you cough offers something. There may come a time where everyone will be required to wear a mask in public. The confusion on the subject comes from concerns over a lack of masks for healthcare workers which need them more than anyone else.
